FRANKFURT (Thomson Financial) - Key members of the German electronics industry are poised to set a minimum wage for their workers of 7.70 eur per hour in Eastern Germany and 9.20 eur in Western Germany, according to a report in Spiegel magazine.
The report said that the minimum wage agreement would hold for around 300,000 workers in the sector should industry and union officials validate it, with approval possibly coming as early as tomorrow.
The German government has recently passed legislation which has simplified the adoption of industry-wide minimum wage agreements.
Talks on the creation of a nation-wide minimum wage are in stalemate after efforts by the Social Democrats party, which has petitioned for many months for a minimum wage, have been met with opposition from Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative Christian Democratic party.
