FRANKFURT (Thomson Financial) - Leading smart card producer Gemalto is 'optimistic' it will win a contract to produce smart cards for the German health insurance system, Gemalto's CEO Olivier Piou said in an interview with Die Welt.
Piou said that the volume of the contract will be in the double-digit mln eur range.
Starting 2008, Germans are required to hold a smart card containing their personal data relating to the health system, such as insurance data.
In the interview, Piou also confirmed the French company's interest in acquiring Bundesdruckerei, a privately owned company producing printed goods including German passports.
Piou admitted, though, that 'to my knowledge, Bundesdruckerei is not up for sale', adding that there are currently no negotiations. maria.sheahan@thomson.com fr/mas/rfw COPYRIGHT Copyright AFX News Limited 2007.
