DANVILLE, Calif. (AP) - The president of JanSport, the popular backpack brand, died when the vintage sports car he was driving lost control and smashed into a tree.
Michael Corvino, 46, of Danville was accelerating while turning left just east of the city when his 1970 Dodge Charger veered off the road and crashed Saturday afternoon, according to a California Highway Patrol statement.
The driver's side of the car struck the tree, killing Corvino, the CHP said.
Corvino's daughter, Alexandra Corvino, 16, and John Shaner, 16, of Danville, were riding in the car when the accident occurred. Both were taken to John Muir Medical Center with minor injuries.
All three were wearing seat belts, according to the CHP.
Corvino was promoted in 2004 to president of San Leandro-based JanSport, a subsidiary of VF Corp., whose brands also include The North Face, Nautica and Lee jeans.
Before entering the apparel industry, Corvino played professional football for the Washington Federals in the USFL. In college, he played linebacker for the University of Maryland Terrapins, where he held a school record for sacks.
'He was a wonderful, wonderful man. There was something so special about him,' his wife, Joyce Corvino, told the Contra Costa Times. 'He made everyone laugh.'
Corvino is also survived by another daughter, Elizabeth, 18.
