(AP) - WHO: General Motors Corp. and the United Auto Workers are negotiating a new contract. The old agreement was set to expire Sept. 14 but has been extended on an hour-by-hour basis since then.
WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT: GM and the UAW are expected to agree to a historic deal that would transfer GM's $51 billion unfunded retiree health care obligation to a trust managed by the union. Wages, pensions, job security and other issues are also at the table.
WHOM IT AFFECTS: GM has 73,000 workers represented by the UAW, but Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC are expected to match many of the terms of GM's agreement. The UAW represents a total of 180,681 active workers and 540,344 retirees and surviving spouses at the three Detroit automakers.
