PHILADELPHIA (Thomson Financial) - GlaxoSmithKline PLC said a study to be published in the Journal of Urology shows that men with enlarged prostates who took a combination of two medications, AVODART (dutasteride) and tamsulosin, experienced significantly greater improvement in urinary symptoms than men prescribed either medication alone.
The data presented will be the fully disclosed results of a 2-year study for which topline results were previously presented in Septr 2007 at a convention in Paris.
AVODART belongs to a medicine class known as 5-alpha reductase inhibitors (5-ARIs). Over time, Avodart shrinks the prostate, improves symptoms and arrests the enlarged prostate disease process. Tamsulosin is an alpha blocker, a class of medicines that relaxes muscles in the bladder and prostate, GSK said.
Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd manufactures and markets Tamsulosin Hydrochloride capsules, a generic version of Japanese company Astellas Pharma Inc's Flomax. tf.TFN-Europe_newsdesk@thomson.com jlw/lam COPYRIGHT Copyright Thomson Financial News Limited 2007.
