TOKYO (Thomson Financial) - Japanese telecom giant Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp plans to offer its new fiber-optic communications service for 200 yen in addition to basic charges, the Nikkei reported over the weekend, without citing sources.
Basic charges for NTT's next-generation network service, or NGN, to be launched at the end of March, are expected to be about the same as for its existing fiber-optic service, the business daily said.
By setting a low add-on fee, NTT aims to attract consumers to the new offering, which features ultrahigh-speed Internet access and viewing of high-resolution images, it said.
The telecommunications giant aims to sign up 3.4 million new subscribers for its fiber-optic services in the year to March 2009, Nikkei said.
