LONDON (Thomson Financial) - Signet Group PLC said a lawsuit has been filed in the New York federal court on March 18 against its US subsidiary Sterling Jewelers Inc alleging that Sterling Jewelers' US store-level employment practices are discriminatory as to compensation and promotional opportunities.
The Anglo-American jewellery retailer said 15 former and current employees working in a few stores had alleged that the US unit paid women less than men who performed similar work, and favoured men over women for promotions.
However, the company said when these allegations first surfaced, they were investigated but the allegations were not substantiated.
The company added Sterling Jewelers denies the allegations and said despite a significant effort to resolve these claims, it has not been able to achieve a resolution.
