NEW YORK, Nov 11 (Reuters) - Short interest on the New York Stock Exchange fell 0.9 percent in late October, the exchange said on Tuesday, suggesting an decrease in bearish sentiment in the stock market.
Short interest as of Oct. 31 was equal to 3.52 percent of the NYSE's total shares outstanding.
As of Oct. 31, short interest has decreased to 13.46 billion shares from 13.58 billion shares as of Oct. 15.
Investors who sell securities 'short' profit from betting stocks will fall. Short-sellers borrow shares and then sell them, waiting for the stock to fall so they can buy the shares back at the lower price, return them to the lender and pocket the difference.
