Jan 28 (Reuters) - Retail farm and ranch supplies retailer Tractor Supply Co posted quarterly results that edged past analyst targets as same-store sales rose, driven by its core consumable category products, and the company reaffirmed its 2009 outlook.
'During the year, we focused on redefining our merchandise mix toward more basic and non-discretionary items, which contributed to higher traffic for the past three quarters,' Chief Executive Jim Wright said in a statement.
The company, which sells pet and animal products, maintenance products for agricultural and rural use and seasonal products, such as lawn and garden power equipment, said it still sees 2009 earnings of $2.84 to $3.00 per share, excluding items, on net sales of about $3.2 billion to $3.3 billion.
Tractor supply, whose competitors include Home Depot Inc and Sears and Roebuck and Co among others, earned $24.7 million for the fourth quarter, compared with $30 million a year earlier.
Shares of the Brentwood, Tennessee-based company closed at $35.26 Wednesday on Nasdaq.
