Feb 27 (Reuters) - As U.S. stocks fell the benchmark S&P
500 index marked its worst
ever start to a year on Friday after the government said it will take a large stake in Citigroup, fanning fears it will increase its role in other major banks.
For February, the broad S&P fell nearly 11 percent, the second worst February on record, coming in behind a decline of more than 18 percent in 1933.
January and February's losses combined make for a decline of 18.62 percent, the worst two-month start on record. For more details, see.
