Aug 18 (Reuters) - Semiconductor gear maker Photronics Inc posted a narrower-than-expected quarterly loss, helped by lower expenses, sending its shares up 2 percent.
For the third quarter, net loss narrowed to $22.8 million, or 55 cents a share, from $205.6 million, or $4.93 a share, a year earlier. The company recorded a charge of $205.4 million in the 2008 third quarter.
Excluding items, the company posted a loss of 13 cents a share in the latest third quarter. Revenue fell 10 percent to $95.5 million.
Analysts were expecting a loss of 19 cents a share, before items, on revenue of $88.3 million, according to Reuters Estimates.
Gross margins rose 520 basis points sequentially.
Customers of the maker of high-precision photographic quartz plates known as photomasks include South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, Skyworks Solutions Inc and Micron Technology Inc.
Shares of the Brookfield, Connecticut-based company were up 10 cents at $5.21 in trading after the bell. They closed at $5.11 Tuesday on Nasdaq.
