PERTH, Sept 13 (Reuters) - U.S. oil major Chevron Corp and partners have given the green light to develop the Gorgon liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Australia, a source briefed on the decision said on Sunday.
Chevron and partners, including ExxonMobil Corp and Royal Dutch Shell, will be holding a signing ceremony with the Australian government and making the announcement on Monday, the source told Reuters.
Chevron could not be reached for comment.
The project, which the government has estimated to cost about A$50 billion ($43 billion), will be Australia's largest ever resource project and is expected to create 6,000 jobs at its peak and generate about A$300 billion of export revenue over 25 years.
The proposed 15 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) project, which comprises three production trains and a gas plant, will be built on the environmentally sensitive Barrow Island Reserve off the coast of western Australia.
