MELBOURNE, Dec 8 (Reuters) - Asian stocks are expected to
open softer on Tuesday, after downbeat comments by Federal
Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke renewed jitters about U.S. economic
growth and dampened speculation of an early interest rate rise.
Bernanke said the U.S. economy faces 'formidable headwinds,' and there was some way to go before policymakers could be sure the U.S. economic recovery could be self-sustaining. For details, see.
Wall Street stocks were mostly lower on Monday as investors digested the remarks, while financial stocks suffered after questions about how Citigroup Inc will exit from a government support programme
Japan's Nikkei average was set to start steady, with Nikkei futures traded in Chicago closing at 10,115, up 5 points from the Osaka close of 10,110.
But Tokyo stocks could succumb to profit-taking after reaching a six-week closing high on Monday.
Asian stocks listed on Wall Street fell 0.9 percent, while MSCI's measure of Asia Pacific stocks excluding Japan fell 0.4 percent.
