Dec 22 (Reuters) - Business software maker Tibco Software Inc posted a better-than-expected quarterly profit, helped by strong services and maintenance revenue and a number of large deals that closed in the quarter, sending its shares up 7 percent in after-hours trade.
Tibco, which makes programs that help computer systems communicate with each other and quickly analyze vast amounts of data, posted a fourth-quarter net income of $31.7 million, or 18 cents a share.
This compares with $32.3 million, or 18 cents a share, it earned in the same period a year ago.
Revenue for the quarter rose 5 percent to $195.6 million. Service and maintenance revenue rose 6 percent to $100.9 million.
During the quarter there were 19 deals over $1 million, the company said in a statement.
Excluding special items, the company earned 23 cents a share.
Analysts on average were expecting earnings of 20 cents a share, excluding special items, on revenue of $180.3 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E.S.
Shares of the Palo Alto, California-based Tibco rose to $9.67 in extended trade, after closing at $9.06 Tuesday on Nasdaq.
