WELLINGTON, Dec 29 (Reuters) - Asian stocks are set to rise
on Tuesday, getting a lift after figures showed improved spending
at U.S. retailers up to Christmas, helping send Wall Street to
2009 highs.
U.S. stocks rose as much as 0.3 percent to closing highs for the year in holiday-thinned trade as the retail data () offset dips in airline stocks amid fresh security concerns.
British markets were closed on Monday but European shares gained 0.5 percent, with banking and energy companies the chief gainers.
Japan's Nikkei average is set to rise, with Nikkei futures traded in Chicago closing 30 points higher than the Osaka close.
Australian shares are set for a strong start, with stock index futures at 4,830, a 39.1 point premium to the underlying index's close on its last trading day on Dec. 24.
