WELLINGTON, Jan 26 (Reuters) - Asian stocks are likely to
open modestly higher on Tuesday after U.S. stocks snapped a
three-session losing streak as some of the recent uncertainty
eased and the appetite for risk improved.
Investor sentiment was bolstered by signs that the U.S. Senate will confirm Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke for a second term, with a vote seen by week's end.
Wall Street stocks trimmed earlier gains to close as much as 0.5 percent higher, with basic material companies among the best performers.
S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures rose after the closing bell as Apple posted sharp gains in quarterly revenue and profit as the company used new accounting standards for its iPhone.
Japan's Nikkei average, which hit a four-week closing low on Monday, is expected to open a tad firmer, with Nikkei futures trading in Chicago 15 points higher than the Osaka close.
Australian and Indian financial markets are closed for public holidays.
The U.S. dollar gained against the yen as Bernanke edged closer to winning support for a second term, with speculation about further monetary loosening by the Bank of Japan also weighing on the yen.
Crude oil rose to $75 a barrel underpinned by a weaker U.S. dollar, higher stocks, and a spill which limited crude deliveries to some U.S. refineries.
Gold rose towards $1,100 an ounce on the back of the softer U.S. dollar, crude's gains, and improved physical buying.
