NEW YORK, Feb 2 (Reuters) - ABC News reported on Tuesday
that its weekly measure of U.S. consumer confidence weakened in
the latest week, largely due to growing pessimism on the
current buying climate.
The ABC Consumer Comfort Index fell to -49 for the week ended Jan. 31 from the prior week's reading of -48, ABC said.
The gauge now sits five points away from its record low of -54, which it first hit in the week to Dec. 1, 2008, and again in the week to Jan. 25, 2009.
For 2009, the index had an average reading of -40, marking its worst year on record since the survey began. It has not seen positive ground since March 2007.
