NEW YORK, April 13 (Reuters) - ABC News said on Tuesday its
weekly index of U.S. consumer confidence fell in the latest
week as Americans continued to shift between positive and
negative views of the national economy and remained hesitant to
spend.
The ABC Consumer Comfort Index fell to -47 for the week to April 11, from -43 the previous week. The gauge has been trapped in a 9-point range so far this year.
The current reading matches the index's 2010 average, while the prior report showed the second-highest level for the gauge so far this year.
But the survey still remains close to a level of -48, the average for 2009, which was its worst year on record.
The index hit an all-time low of -54 in the week to Dec. 1, 2008, and then again in the week to Jan. 25, 2009, and has not been in positive territory since March 2007.
