Wall St rises modestly with earnings eyed
U.S. stocks eked out a gain on Tuesday as investors looked ahead to earnings from big banks and tech bellwethers, even as disappointing revenue from Alcoa Inc acted as a headwind.
With the Standard & Poor's index up about 40 percent over the past year, some analysts say stock gains during earnings season could be minimal as equities tend to do worse in earnings periods after making gains in anticipation of strong results.
But stock index futures ticked higher after Intel Corp reported first-quarter results after the closing bell that beat expectations and gave an outlook for the second quarter, suggesting stocks could get a boost at the open on Wednesday.

Dow 11,256 level seen present a critical hurdle
Even if the Dow Jones industrial average can maintain its close above 11,000 it will still encounter formidable resistance about +1.5 percent higher, Instinet said in a market technicals commentary on Tuesday.
The 200-week MA is +1.2 percent above current levels at 11,133 and the 61.8 percent Fibonacci retracement level (of the entire Bear market) is +2.2 percent higher (at 11,256).
'Hitting that area would also fully exploit the air-pocket generated by the fall 2008 meltdown, which suggests pretty high odds for a substantial fire-fight near that level, especially since it would coincide with resistance in the SPX near 1,225.'
The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 0.19 points, or 0.02 percent, at 1,196.67 in early afternoon trade on Tuesday.
