April 20 (Reuters) - Sony Corp is near its goal of reducing suppliers by more than half, well ahead of the March 2011 deadline it set last spring, the Nikkei business daily said.
After suffering a group operating loss of more than 200 billion yen ($2.17 billion) for the year ended March 31, 2009, Sony had announced plans to reduce its parts and materials procurement sources to 1,200 from 2,500, the paper said.
As of the end of last month, Sony had already pared the number of suppliers to 1,300, the Nikkei said.
In fiscal 2009 the company lowered procurement costs by about 500 billion yen. It aims to achieve additional cuts in the current fiscal year, the daily said.
Sony, which is also working to streamline its software supply by centralizing purchasing at the headquarters' procurement division, aims to slash by about 10 percent its more than 150 billion yen annual software procurement costs, the paper said.
The software include solutions used in television sets, video game machines and digital cameras, Nikkei said.
