Wall Street rallies on earnings, Greece aid hopes
Stocks chalked up their best day in nearly two months as investors welcomed a string of robust earnings reports, while Greece appeared close to a bailout deal, easing fears about a wider sovereign debt crisis.
News that Greece was readying severe austerity measures to secure a multibillion-euro aid package spurred widespread relief, and the more beaten-down sectors, like banks, recouped recent losses for a second day running.
'There is a continuation of this tug of war between the negative bias put into the market by sovereign debt worries out of Europe,' said Craig Peckham, equity trading strategist at Jefferies & Company in New York. 'Right now, the U.S. corporate fundamental story is winning the battle.'

Will May be the month to sell?
With the Dow industrials at 19-month highs, investors have been wondering when the next leg down will occur. Bespoke analysts say May used to be the month to sell, but noted that the trend is changing.
'Both March and April have lived up to their historical bullish patterns this year. But now we're entering the 'Sell in May, and Go Away' period that suggests traders take the next few months off,' wrote Bespoke analysts in a research note.
'Over the last 100 years, the Dow has averaged a gain of 0.09 percent in May with gains 53 percent of the time ... But the Dow has averaged a nice-sized gain of 1.80 percent in May over the last 20 years with gains 65 percent of the time ... It isn't until June that the market has seen declines over the 20 and 50 years.'

Higher oil prices boost Exxon, Conoco profits
Higher oil prices boosted quarterly profits for Exxon Mobil Corp and ConocoPhillips, but Exxon's earnings were hurt by recently enacted U.S health reform legislation.
The healthcare costs, weak performance from its refineries and higher-than-expected exploration costs pulled Exxon's earnings below Wall Street forecasts, a stark contrast with rivals BP Plc and Royal Dutch Shell Plc, which both topped market expectations when they released quarterly figures earlier this week.
