May 4 (Reuters) - Chipmaker Atmel Corp posted a better-than-expected quarterly profit, helped by continued strength in its microcontroller and touchscreen technology products.
For the first quarter, the company earned $16.6 million, or 4 cents a share, compared with $3.6 million, or 1 cent per share, a year ago.
Analysts were expecting earnings of 1 cent a share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Revenue rose 28.4 percent to $348.6 million, above analysts' expectations of $340.6 million.
Microcontrollers, which are entire computers on a single chip that can be used in applications from cars to smartphones, fetched revenue of $151 million.
Atmel said France-based INSIDE Contactless S.A. has agreed to purchase Atmel's Secure Microcontroller Solutions business based in Rousset, France and East Kilbride, UK.
Atmel, which did not disclose the financial terms of the transaction, expects the deal to close in the second half of 2010.
Shares of the San-Jose, California-based company closed at $5.37 Tuesday on Nasdaq.
