BOGOTA, June 3 (Reuters) - Colombia's exports soared 43.8 percent in April compared with the same month a year earlier while exports from January to April grew 26.2 percent versus the same period last year, the government said on Thursday.
Latin America's No. 4 oil exporter grew around 4 percent in the first quarter, in a sign the Andean nation was recovering after being hit by the global financial crisis, Colombian President Alvaro Uribe said.
Exports in April increased to $3.49 billion, the DANE statistics agency said.
In April, exports to the United states grew 98 percent compared with the same month last year. Traditional exports increased 86 percent to $2.24 billion, mainly due to sales of petroleum and petroleum products, it said.
Exports from in the first four months of 2010 rose to $12.62 billion free-on-board (FOB) from $10 billion FOB in the same period last year, the agency said.
Traditional exports in the January-April period soared 60 percent due to oil and petroleum products while non-traditional exports fell 6.6 percent due to lower sales of live animals and their products, it said.
