BOSTON, July 6 (Reuters) - Hardware maker EMC Corp, said on Tuesday it will buy Greenplum Inc, a small software firm, taking on Oracle Corp in selling programs that help companies analyze business trends.
Financial terms of the all-cash deal were not disclosed.
Oracle, the longtime leader in the database software market, entered EMC's core business of selling storage equipment in January with its purchase of Sun Microsystems.
Greenplum sells software for data warehousing computer systems that large businesses use to analyze data about business trends. The top providers of data warehousing software and hardware include Oracle, Teradata Corp and International Business Machines Corp.
Sun Microsystems co-founder Scott McNealy is an executive advisor to Greenplum, helping the company in areas such as strategic planning and business development.
McNealy receives no compensation for his work with Greenplum, according to the firm's website.
The deal is expected to close in the third quarter, the companies said.
