NEW YORK, Aug 10 (Reuters) - While 2010 has been a disappointing year for mergers and acquisitions in general, energy and power deals are having a banner year.
There have been 2,050 energy and power deals so far this year, more than in the same period of any other year on record, according to Thomson Reuters data. In 2007, the next highest year, there were 1,984 energy and power deals worldwide, through early August.
So far, 2010 is the fourth-highest year on record for energy and power deals by value with just under $292 billion in total. That comes in behind 2007, 2006 and 2008, which had $399 billion, $313 billion, and $292.1 billion respectively of energy and power deals during the same period.
GDF Suez's $14.3 billion takeover of Britain's International Power is the largest energy and power transaction in 2010 and also the largest cross-border deal so far this year, according to Thomson Reuters Deals Intelligence.
Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan and Morgan Stanley all advised on that deal and are the top three investment banking firms for energy and power deals for 2010 by value. Goldman has advised on $73.38 billion of the deals so far this year, JP Morgan has advised on $58.84 billion of them, and Morgan Stanley has advised on $50.98 billion of energy and power deals, Deals Intelligence said.
