Sept 15 (Reuters) - AAR Corp, a provider of parts and maintenance services to the aviation industry, posted better-than-expected first-quarter results, partly helped by higher sales to government and defense customers at Aviation Worldwide Services, which it recently acquired.
For the June-Aug quarter, net income was $13.7 million, or 35 cents a share, compared with $10.2 million, or 27 cents a share a year ago.
Sales rose 21 percent to $412.2 million.
Sales to government and defense customers increased 45 percent over last year and were driven by sales at Aviation Worldwide Services and the company's defense logistics business, AAR said.
Analysts on average had expected earnings of 30 cents a share on revenue of $381.5 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Shares of the Wood Dale, Illinois-based company closed at $17.66 Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange. They have lost 25 percent of their value since May 24 when the company forecast a weak fourth-quarter.
