WASHINGTON, Sept 16 (Reuters) - The U.S. pipeline regulator said on Thursday that Enbridge Inc can reopen its 6A pipeline that brings Canadian crude to refineries in the Midwest because the company has fixed a leak that spilled oil in Illinois.
The Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) confirmed an earlier report by Enbridge that the regulator had acknowledged the restart would go ahead on Friday morning.
'After a thorough review of the repairs made by Enbridge, (PHMSA) concurs that the necessary steps have been taken and agree that Enbridge may safely restart Line 6A,' the regulator said.
The leak was caused by a puncture of the pipeline, most likely a rock, and was not the result of a pipeline integrity issue, the National Transportation Safety Board said in a preliminary investigation.
