Nov 16 (Reuters) - Chinese game developer Giant Interactive reported third-quarter revenue below Wall Street expectations as fewer online gamers visited its website.
Average concurrent users -- number of players online playing its games at any given time -- fell 19.7 percent from the prior quarter.
The company's quarterly profit was in line with analysts' view, helped in part by higher average revenue per user (ARPU).
For the July-September period, the company earned $31.2 million, or 13 cents per ADS. ARPU rose 0.8 percent from the second quarter.
Analysts on average were expecting Giant -- whose games include ZT Online Series, Giant Online and King of Kings III1 -- to earn 13 cents earnings on $51 million in revenue, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
The Shanghai-based company derives its revenue by charging its users for its multiplayer online (MMO) games -- which connects large number of players to the same gameplay.
It reported $50.6 million in third-quarter revenue, up 16.7 percent from a year-ago period.
Shares of the company, which have gained 10 cents in value since it announced second quarter results in August, closed lower by 1 percent at $6.87 on Tuesday on Nasdaq.
