NEW YORK, Dec 19 (Reuters) - The average price for a gallon of gasoline in the United States rose 7.59 cents per gallon even though oil prices fell slightly, according to an industry analyst.
The national average for self-serve regular unleaded gas was nearly $2.98 a gallon on Dec. 17 compared with the prior two weeks when the average price was about $2.91, according to the Lundberg survey of about 2,500 gas stations.
'It's certainly enough to hurt at the consumer level,' said survey editor Trilby Lundberg.
The price of crude oil dipped about $1.17 during the same period. On Dec. 3 it stood at $89.
If not for the small decline in crude oil, the average price of gasoline would have been above $3, Lundberg said.
The price of gas from one year ago was about $2.59.
During the most recent survey, San Francisco had the highest average price for self-service regular unleaded gas in the 48 continental states at $3.29, while the lowest price was $2.68 a gallon in Denver, Colorado.
