Wall St rises as earnings, M&A heighten optimism
Stocks rose on Tuesday as solid earnings and a flurry of merger activity underpinned a steady upward trend that reinforced investor optimism for the coming year.

S&P
Dividend increases for S&P 500 companies are up sharply this year from 2009 levels, and the trend is likely to continue in 2011, according to Standard & Poor's.
Dividend increases totaled 255 so far this year, up from 2009's 157, S&P said. Two-thirds of current S&P 500 dividend payers are expected to pay more in 2011 than in 2010, it said.

Traders target SanDisk call options
Flash memory maker SanDisk Corp peaked at $51.65 following an upgrade from Raymond James on Tuesday morning and pulled back in late afternoon trading to $51.50. still up 4.65 percent.. The stock's option volume includes about 36,000 calls and 12,000 puts traded by 3:35 p.m. EST, according to Trade Alert. The January $55 calls are the most popular options. Earlier in the session, 8,300 traded and, with 62 percent trading at the ask price, it appears some investors bought these calls and positioning on hopes for a move beyond $55 through the January expiration, said optionsXpress senior market analyst Joe Cusick. The strike's volume has expanded to volume of 15,510 contracts in late trade, Trade Alert data show. The January $50 and April $60 strike calls drew interest as well, Cusick said. Options implied volatility on SanDisk is higher by 8.4 percent in early afternoon trade to stand at 37.47 percent, said Interactive Brokers Group equity options analyst Caitlin Duffy, who also cited heavy call activity.

S&P 500 earnings look rosy on 2011 overseas sales
The U.S. economy may sleepwalk its way to recovery next year, but corporate earnings are set for a record 2011 thanks to strengthening overseas demand.
Overseas sales, particularly in emerging markets, will be key for profits for many U.S. companies in 2011, and sectors that have outperformed this year are expected to remain top bets, based on strong demand from emerging economies.
