SYDNEY, Jan 5 (Reuters) - Australian stocks could make a
soft start with miners seen weak after a strong sell-off in
the broader commodities complex that enabled corrections in
many over-heated markets and pushed copper prices off a fresh
record high.
* Shares in top airline Qantas will be in focus after a newspaper said it was set to resume direct A380 flights to Los Angeles, the most lucrative route for the super jumbo.
The airline grounded its super jumbo fleet after a Rolls-Royce engine exploded in November, but it has resumed A380 flights on some other routes
* Stock index futures nudged up 3 points or 0.1 percent higher to 4,739, still a 3.5 points discount to the underlying S&P/ASX 200 index, that ended marginally weaker on Tuesday.
* Copper prices ended lower on Tuesday, falling from a fresh record high in London.
The Reuters-Jefferies CRB index dropped 2 percent in its sharpest one-day fall since mid-November as investors unwound many positions that had posted heady gains and braced for first-quarter index fund rebalancing..
* BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto fell 1.9 percent and 0.8 percent respectively in New York trade.
* On Wall Street, investors abandoned red-hot commodity shares on Tuesday, while fears of lower supermarket profits hit food retailers, sending the S&P and Nasdaq lower. The Dow Jones industrial average added 20.43 points though.
* New Zealand's benchmark NZX 50 index climbed 0.61 percent in early trade.
