HOUSTON, Jan 23 (Reuters) - Exxon Mobil Corp's 192,500 barrel per day (bpd) joint-venture refinery in Chalmette, Louisiana, reported a spill of lubricating oil into the Mississippi River south of New Orleans on Friday, according to a notice filed with the U.S. National Response Center.
The amount of the oil released was unknown, but boom had been placed to contain the rainbow sheen seen in the river, according to the notice.
The spill was caused by a leak in a heat exchanger at the refinery, according to the notice.
The Chalmette refinery is a joint venture between Exxon and Venezuela's national oil company PDVSA.
