MELBOURNE, Feb 10 (Reuters) - Australian stocks are likely
to slip on Thursday following six straight days of gains and a
worse than expected first-half result from top phone company
Telstra Corp.
* Stock index futures dipped 0.1 percent to
4,870.0, a 34.8
point discount to the underlying S&P/ASX 200 index. The benchmark rose 0.3 percent on Wednesday, powered by the banks, taking its gains to 3 percent over the past week.
* New Zealand's benchmark NZX 50 index fell 0.4 percent to 3,374.2 in early trade.
* On Wall Street, investors took profits after a recent rise in U.S. Stocks but a late-hour rally in Bank of America shares helped the Dow post its eighth straight day of gains.
* Copper ended down after falling to its lowest level in over a week on Wednesday, as prices continued to back away from records hit earlier this week amid concerns about high inflation and tepid demand in China.
* Telstra Corp reported a 36 percent fall in first-half profit to A$1.2 billion, well below analysts' forecasts of around A$1.4 billion. However it reaffirmed it would hold its dividend steady for 2011 and 2012.
* Toll road operator Transurban Group reported a
9.5 percent jump in first
half proportional earnings to A$362.8 million, beating analysts' forecasts.
* Alumina Ltd shares could come under pressure after it reported 2010 underlying profit rose to $37 million, well below analysts' forecasts at $65 million.
* Global miner Rio Tinto is due to report its 2010 results after the market closes, with analysts expecting it to more than double its second-half profit to $8.29 billion from $3.73 billion a year earlier.
