MELBOURNE, Feb 22 (Reuters) - Australian stocks are set to
slip on Tuesday with violence in Libya sapping demand for risk
assets like the heavyweight miners, and no lead from Wall
Street, closed for a holiday.
* Stock index futures rose 0.1 percent to 4,898.0, a 2-point discount to the underlying S&P/ASX 200 index . The benchmark index fell 0.7 percent on Monday as monetary tightening in China weighed on the miners and unrest in Libya and Bahrain dampened investor confidence.
* Copper slipped on Monday, as tensions in Arab states deterred investors from riskier assets and on concern China's recent monetary tightening may dent demand from the world's top consumer of metals.
* Gold prices jumped above $1,400 an ounce on Monday for the first time in nearly seven weeks as violence flared in Libya and the Middle East, raising interest in the precious metal as a haven from risk.
* No2 steel producer OneSteel could be in focus after it said underlying first-half net profits rose 5 percent, helped by strong demand from China for iron ore, although the strong Australian dollar cut into earnings.
* Papua New Guinea oil and gas producer Oil Search is also expected to report on Tuesday and update the market on its key PNG LNG project.
* New Zealand's benchmark NZX 50 index fell 0.3 percent to 3,371.6, XX in early trade, with power company Contact Energy down 0.7 percent after reporting a weaker first half net profit.
