MOUNTAIN VIEW (dpa-AFX) - The U.S. Department of Justice announced that it has closed its investigation into Google Inc.'s (GOOG) acquisition of Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. (MMI). The Antitrust Division has determined that the acquisition is unlikely to substantially lessen competition.
Earlier in the day, the European Commission approved the proposed acquisition. Google, in mid-August, agreed to acquire Motorola Mobility for $40 per share in cash, or a total of about $12.5 billion.
The Antitrust Division also announced the closing of its investigations into acquisitions by Apple Inc. (AAPL), Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) and Research in Motion Ltd. (RIM, RIM.TO) of certain Nortel Networks Corp. (NRTLQ.OB) patents, and the acquisition by Apple of certain Novell Inc. patents.
