CUPERTINO (dpa-AFX) - Apple has confirmed plans to unveil two new editions of the iPhone along with a wearable computer nicknamed the iWatch in a press conference next week. The press conference is scheduled to take place in the same venue in which Steve Jobs debuted the first Macintosh computer in 1984-the Flint Center for the Performing Arts in Cupertino, California.
The new iPhones will both boast a larger touch screen and the watch will be the first completely new item rolled out by current Apple chairman Tim Cook. According to the New York Times the new iWatch will have a mix of fitness tracking and GPS features as well as mapping, and access to content like email and social networking messages.
Tech analyst Tim Bajarin of the firm Creative Strategies spoke with nytimes.com about the announcement saying it's 'historic' and 'the design of this product is all Tim's fingerprints.' The wearable device is expected to compete directly with similar products offered by Nike, Sony and Samsung.
No official release dates have been announced but the new iPhones are expected in stores within several weeks while the iWatch is expected next year.
