WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - Despite still facing a tough primary challenge from Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton specifically targeted potential general election opponent Donald Trump in a new campaign ad released Monday.
The ad attacks Trump for controversial remarks suggesting women should be punished for having abortions, Mexican immigrants are rapists and the U.S. should ban Muslims from coming to the country.
The 30-second spot goes on to suggest that Clinton is the one tough enough to stop Trump, an apparent attack on Sanders' electability.
'Donald Trump says we can solve America's problems by turning against each other. It's wrong, and it goes against everything New York and America stand for,' Clinton says in the ad.
A Clinton campaign aide told ABC News the ad will begin airing in New York City early this week and is part of an existing, high six-figure ad buy in the city.
The spot marks the first time that the Clinton campaign has released an ad that mentions Trump by name, although an earlier ad showed a sign with his name on it.
The release of the ad comes a little over a week before Clinton and Sanders square off in the New York primary on April 19th.
