BENTONVILLE (dpa-AFX) - Walmart's subscription-free, premium video streaming service Vudu Tuesday launched Vudu Movies on Us, offering thousands of HD movies and TV shows with limited commercials for free.
Jeremy Verba, vice president and general manager, Vudu, said, 'Vudu is always looking for new ways for customers to save money - and nothing is more affordable than free... Millions of customers already buy and rent content on Vudu on a monthly basis. This new service provides value for customers who want to watch movies and TV for free, when and how they wish to watch, without sacrificing quality.'
Customers can log on to Vudu from their browsers, mobile or living room devices, and then watch blockbuster and classic titles, including Mad Max, True Grit, Abduction, School of Rock, etc.. with no fees, no subscriptions, and limited commercials, in premium 1080p high definition, the retail giant noted.
The movie titles include critically-acclaimed films, family-friendly features, date night movies, thrillers, documentaries and more.
They stream in full HD 1080p resolution, with Dolby Digital sound when available, and can be watched across smart TVs, Blu-ray players, and TV connected devices such as Roku, Chromecast and gaming consoles.
Vudu is also accessible from the web and via downloadable app for iOS and Android, including the recently released Mi Box Android TV device.
To access Vudu Movies on Us, customers first long on to Vudu, then take the 'New' tab on their desktop, or 'Spotlight' tab on their living room or mobile device, then take 'Movies on Us' to access these free movies or TV titles with limited ads.
For Vudu, its Movies on Us service is the first foray into a free, high-definition streaming option. Earlier this year, Vudu was the first to integrate 4K UHD with Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos Audio.
According to Walmart, more than 42 percent of American households stream content at home. Among these, most prefer to watch long-form content like movies and TV from ad-supported services on their living room devices.
