WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - As Donald Trump nears the 100-day mark of his administration, prominent human rights organizations have concluded that instead of protecting and advancing human rights, the U.S. President 'has embraced policies across a whole swath of issues that threaten them.'
Amnesty International held a protest outside the U.S. Embassy in London to mark Trump's first 100 days in office, which completes on April 29.
'His rhetoric and actions have regularly undermined longstanding United States commitments to basic values. He routinely distorts the truth, disparages the media, and scapegoats vulnerable communities,' Human Rights Watch Washington Director Sarah Margon said in her report.
Trump's administration has disdain for all rights, except the rights of corporations, according to the rights group Open Democracy.
As the first 100 days of Trump's administration come to a close, Amnesty International compiled a list of '100 ways it tried to threaten human rights in the U.S. and around the world - sometimes succeeding, and sometimes being blocked by a powerful and growing resistance movement.'
'These first 100 days show how dangerous Trump's agenda is, and they're also a road-map for how to stop it and protect human rights in the USA and around the world,' said Margaret Huang, executive director of Amnesty International USA.
Among the human rights threats, Amnesty International lists abusive U.S.-Mexico border enforcement practices that treat people like criminals when they come to the U.S. seeking asylum from horrific violence; extreme restrictions on women's access to reproductive health care in the U.S.; repeal of protections for LGBT workers and transgender students; and granting permission for the Dakota Access Pipeline to drill under the Missouri River north of Standing Rock, threatening the water source for tribes.
Attempts to ban people from Muslim-majority countries, and an attempt to take away health care coverage from millions of Americans have also been cited as Trump policies that violate human rights.
Human Rights watch warns that as Trump reckons with the reality and responsibility of governing, he would do well to realize that abandoning support for basic human rights and the rule of law may seem expedient in the short term, but it's sure to become a liability down the road.
