LONDON (dpa-AFX) - The government of Scotland announced its plans to phase out all petrol and diesel cars by 2032, which is eight years earlier than proposals set out by the English and French governments.
In July, Britain said it would ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2040 to cut pollution. France has also vowed to phase them out by then.
'Our aim is for new petrol and diesel cars and vans to be phased out in Scotland by 2032,' Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said on Tuesday.
Scotland accounts for less than 10 percent of the British car market.
Sturgeon outlined plans to 'massively expand' electric charging points and set up pilot projects that will encourage citizens to buy more electric vehicles.
The Government said they made decision due to adverse impact that poor air quality was having on people's health.
'The Government has a manifesto commitment for almost all cars and vans on our roads to be zero emission by 2050. We believe this would necessitate all new cars and van being zero emission vehicles by 2040,' said Jesse Norman, the parliamentary under-secretary at the Department for Transport, according to the Independent.co.uk.
