WOLFSBURG (dpa-AFX) - German car maker Volkswagen reportedly plans to recall around five million cars in China due to faulty airbags. Reuters reported that the airbags were made by Takata Corp., Japan. There have been 16 deaths linked to faulty airbags globally.
Earlier, in the first week of September Xinhua, the official news agency of China had reported that Volkswagen and its China joint ventures FAW-Volkswagen and SAIC Volkswagen has recalled 1.83 million vehicles in China over fuel pump issues.
On September 10, Xinhua reported a recall of 39,458 Mercedes-Benz cars imported to China due to power steering and engine control modules.
The Japanese airbag maker had filed for bankruptcy in June with the Tokyo District court after the biggest recall by major automakers. The company was facing a liability of around $15 billion and several lawsuits. According various reports more than 60 million vehicles in U.S. and around 125 million vehicles globally are under recall due to faulty airbags.
Takata has agreed to be acquired by Key Safety Systems for around $1.6 billion. Key Safety is a global leader in the system integration and performance of safety-critical components, owned by Chinese and based in U.S.
