WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - President Donald Trump indicated Thursday he would like to see Florida Governor Rick Scott run against Democratic Senator Bill Nelson, D-Fla., next year.
Trump's remarks came as he took a tour of the damage caused by Hurricane Irma, injecting politics into what is typically an apolitical moment.
'I have to say that, what do I know? But I hope this man right here, Rick Scott, runs for the Senate,' Trump said after praising the governor's response to the storm.
'I don't know what he's going to do,' the president added. 'But I know that at a certain point it ends for you, and we can't let it end. So I hope he runs for Senate.'
Scott has publicly said he is considering running against Nelson but has also claimed he does not feel any pressure to make an early decision.
A billionaire former healthcare executive, Scott was elected to his second term as governor of Florida in 2014, defeating Republican-turned-Democrat Charlie Crist.
