WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - President Donald Trump has recently seen a modest improvement in his job approval rating, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.
Forty-three percent of Americans said they approve of the job Trump is doing as president, up from 40 percent in a poll conducted last month.
While 52 percent of Americans continue to disapprove of Trump's job performance, that is down from 55 percent in the previous poll.
The modest improvement in Trump's approval rating may reflect support for his recent deal with Democratic leaders to provide hurricane relief, raise the debt ceiling, and fund the government.
Seventy-one percent of Americans said they approve of Trump agreeing with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., while just 8 percent disapprove.
While the poll showed only slight increases in Trump's approval rating among Republicans and Democrats, his approval among independents jumped to 41 percent from 32 percent.
'Going to the middle has helped him with the middle - without costing him much from his own base,' Democratic pollster Fred Yang told NBC News.
However, NBC News noted that Trump gets negative approval rating on several other issues, including border security and immigration, the situation with North Korea, and healthcare.
The poll results also suggest that Americans are not very impressed with what Trump has accomplished as president thus far.
Just 33 percent said Trump has accomplished a 'great deal' or a 'fair amount' as president compared to the 66 percent who said he has accomplished 'only some' or 'very little.'
The NBC/WSJ survey of 900 adults was conducted September 14th through 18th and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.
