WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - Saudi Arabia's King Salman has issued a decree that finally allows women to drive.
According to Saudi state media, Saudi King issued an order that paves way for women to obtain driver's licenses. The new rule to issue driver's licenses to men and women are set to be implemented by June.
Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world that does restricts women from driving. Only men are issued driving licenses, while women who are caught driving in public are arrested and fined.
In an official release, the king said his made the decision after calculating the negative and positive points of the ban on women driving. The decree also makes sure that it does not contradict with Islamic law.
The change was approved by a majority of the Council of Senior Scholars, Saudi Arabia's highest religious body.
'Saudi Arabia allows women to drive,' tweeted Saudi Arabia's Foreign Ministry.
