WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - Republican approval of the U.S. Supreme Court has seen a substantial improvement over the past year, according to the results of a new Gallup poll.
The poll found that 65 percent of Republicans approve of the way the Supreme Court is handling its job, up from just 26 percent last year.
The jump in Republican approval of the court comes as President Donald Trump's nominee Neil Gorsuch was confirmed as a Supreme Court Justice since the previous poll.
Meanwhile, the poll also showed that Democratic approval of the Supreme Court has tumbled to 40 percent from 67 percent.
Gallup noted both major political parties' views of the court have varied drastically since 2000, reflecting changes in political power as well as decisions made by the court itself.
Among Americans as a whole, 49 percent approve of the way the Supreme Court is handling its job, while 40 percent disapprove.
Gallup's Justin McCarthy said views of the court could be impacted by several politically charged issues on the docket for this upcoming term, including religious liberties vs. gay rights and partisan gerrymandering.
The Gallup survey of 1,022 adults was conducted September 6th through 10th and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
