WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - Republican Senator Ted Cruz, R-Tex., has a significant lead over Democratic Congressman Beto O'Rourke among likely voters in the Texas Senate race, according to the results of a Quinnipiac University poll released on Tuesday.
The poll showed Cruz with a 54 percent to 45 percent lead over O'Rourke among likely Texas voters, with 93 percent of voters saying their mind is made up.
Cruz benefits from strong support among men and white voters and O'Rourke has big leads among black and Hispanic voters, while women are divided.
The lead for Cruz also comes as 53 percent of likely Texas voters approve of his handling of his job as Senator compared to 44 percent that disapprove.
Cruz also has a positive 52 percent to 43 percent favorability rating, while O'Rourke gets a divided 43 percent to 42 percent favorability rating.
'The Texas U.S. Senate race between Sen. Ted Cruz and Congressman Beto O'Rourke, and Democratic hopes for an upset win there, have boosted talk of a Senate takeover,' said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll. 'These numbers may calm that talk.'
He added, 'Congressman O'Rourke may be drawing big crowds and media attention, but Texas likely voters like Sen. Cruz better.'
The Quinnipiac survey of 807 likely Texas voters was conducted September 11th through 17th and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.1 percentage points.
