WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - Tailor Cut Produce has recalled certain cut fruit mix after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration identified the products as potential source of an outbreak of illnesses caused by Salmonella Javiana in Pennsylvania.
The FDA and the Pennsylvania Department of Health announced their investigation of 31 laboratory-confirmed illnesses of Salmonella at four healthcare facilities in southeast Pennsylvania.
According to the agencies, epidemiologic and traceback evidence indicate that fruit mix with cantaloupe, honeydew, pineapple, and grapes from Tailor Cut Produce are a potential source of the outbreak.
In the recall notice, the New Jersey -based Tailor Cut said the recall involves Fruit luau, cut honeydew, cut cantaloupe and cut pineapple products, which were distributed in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Delaware between November 15 and December 1, 2019. The product comes in 2/1 gallon cases with a date of production stamped on the side.
The company has suspended the production of the products, and it continues its investigation along with the FDA to find the source of the problem.
The company also urged distributors with the recalled cut fruit products to quarantine them and to call for further instructions.
The FDA stated, 'Because this fruit mix may have been distributed to nursing homes, schools, hospitals and other facilities that cater to vulnerable populations, it is important that these facilities do not sell or serve this fruit medley.'
Salmonella are a group of bacteria that can cause gastrointestinal illness and fever called salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. Most people with salmonellosis develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps.
In recent times, Go Raw, LLC recalled Quest Beef Cat Food for the same concerns.
The FDA in September had issued a warning letter against Performance Dog frozen raw pet food, manufactured by Bravo Packing, Inc., for fear of Salmonella contamination.
George's Prepared Foods also recently recalled ready-to-eat pork sausage patty and turkey sausage patty products due to possible Salmonella contamination.
