STOCKHOLM (dpa-AFX) - Ericsson (ERIC, ERICb.ST, ERIC_A.ST, ERCB.DE, ERIBR.HE), Monday said that along with international defense company Leonardo, and the Italian Navy, it has successfully completed a maritime connectivity test using an Ericsson 5G Standalone or SA system. The trial enabled secure connectivity between naval units operating in a day-and-night open-sea training scenario.
The Swedish telecom company said that a fully self-contained end-to-end Ericsson 5G SA network was installed aboard the Italian Navy's amphibious landing ship San Giorgio, which served as the lead unit during the experimentation campaign. Ericsson 5G SA customer premises equipment was also installed on the multi-purpose combat ship Raimondo Montecuccoli, Ericsson added.
The demonstration took place during Operational Experimentation (OPEX) 2-25 in the Gulf of Taranto and builds on collaboration under the European Defence Fund's 5G COMPAD project. While Ericsson provided 5G SA connectivity, Leonardo integrated its NINE encryption solution to ensure secure communications, the company said in an official statement.
Commenting on the developments, Patrick Johansson, Senior Vice President and Head of Ericsson Europe, Middle East and Africa, said, 'The Italian Navy is seeking the best possible connectivity solutions for its related needs, and we are proud to work with them towards that goal. Italy's central Mediterranean location, with an exclusive economic zone spanning more than 500,000 Sq Km of sea, means the Italian Navy plays a strategically important role in Europe.'
On the Nasdaq, ERIC ended Friday's trading at $11.07, up $0.10 or 0.91 percent. In after-hours trading, the stock was trading at $11.12, up $0.05 or 0.45 percent.
