SOLNA (dpa-AFX) - Skanska AB (SKSBF.PK, SKAb.ST) Monday said that it has signed a contract with Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB to build new rock caverns for the expansion of the Short-Lived Radioactive Waste final repository, or SFR, in Forsmark, Sweden. The contract is worth about 1 billion Swedish Kroner and will be recorded in Skanska's Sweden order bookings for the third quarter of 2026.
The Swedish construction and engineering company said that the new agreement adds the production phase, or Phase 2, to the existing design phase, or Phase 1 contract. The production work will be carried out in several stages, with separate contracts signed for each stage, Skanska said in an official statement.
As per the terms of the contract, Skanska will construct six new rock caverns to store short-lived low- and intermediate-level operational radioactive waste. Each cavern will be around 240 to 275 meters long and built at a depth of 120 to 140 meters, matching the lowest level of the existing facility. The work includes rock excavation, civil construction, earthworks, water and sanitation systems, and tunnel lining, the company added.
The company said that construction is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2026 and be completed by the fourth quarter of 2028. The expanded SFR facility is expected to be ready for test operations between 2030 and 2031.
On the Stockholm Exchange, SKAb.ST ended Friday's trading at 267.60 Swedish Kroner, up 3.24 percent.
